The procedures for the canonization of saints remained traditional, but the new saints reflected to a degree the personality of each pope. Canonizations honoured the person of the saint, recognized popular cults, or praised the religious order to which the saint belonged, with a bias towards founders of religious orders, women, and the Latin peoples (French, Spanish and Italian). But some deliberately reflected the papacy's opposition to the modern world. Devotion to the Virgin Mary was particularly strong, but controversy surrounded famous manifestations of the Marial cult, such as Lourdes and the cult of St Thérèse of Lisieux.
