Graus, Volk, Herrscher und Heiliger im Reich der Merowinger (Prague, 1965), and in P. Riché, Éducation et culture dans l'occident barbare (Paris, 1962). R. R. Bezzola, Les Origines et la formation de la littérature courtoise en occident, i (Paris, 1944) and E. R. Curtius, European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages (London, 1953) should not be neglected. L. van der Essen, Étude critique et littéraire sur les Vitae des saints mérovingiens (Louvain–Paris, 1907) is confined to saints of Belgium, and W. Pohlkamp, ‘Hagio‐graphische Texte als Zeugnisse einer “histoire de la sainteté” ’, FMSt 11 (1977) to those of Aquitaine. O. G. Oexle, ‘Die Karolinger und die Stadt des heiligen Arnulf’, FMSt 1 (1967) casts light on St Arnulf's background. The value of monastic necrologies for the study of holy men is exemplified by the Liber Memorialis of Remiremont (MGH Libri Memoriales, i, 1970). P. Brown's innovative ‘Relics and social status in the age of Gregory of Tours’ is reprinted in his Society and the Holy in Late Antiquity (London, 1982), and see R. A. Markus, ‘The cult of icons in sixth‐century Gaul’, Journ. of Theol. Studies, xxix, i (1978), pp. 151–7. Still the best summary of Gregory's hagiography is C. A. Bernouilli, Die Heiliger der Merowinger (Tübingen, 1900). The selection of translations in W. C. McDermott, Gregory of Tours, Selections from the Minor Works (Philadelphia, 1949) is generally sound, so far as it goes. There are relevant contributions, especially on Venantius, in Études Mérovingiennes; (p.425) but the principal studies of Venantius are D. Tardi, Fortunat, étude sur un dernier représentant de la poésie latine dans la Gaule mérovingienne (Paris, 1927) and better, R. Koebner, Venantius Fortunatus (Leipzig–Berlin, 1915). J. Leclercq, ‘L'Écriture sainte dans l'hagiographie monastique du haut moyen âge’ is in Spoleto, x (1963), and B. de Gaiffier, ‘Hagiographie et historiographie’ in Spoleto, xvii, i (1970).
