Covers the Victorian missionary era in Africa in the nineteenth century. There are two main sections. The first is entitled ‘The evolution of a movement’, and discusses where Protestant mission had arrived by the 1840s; the Catholic revival; David Livingstone and his influence; the Verona Fathers and White Fathers; and the state of missionary complexity by 1880. The second section, ‘Style, priorities, and mind’, discusses missionary characteristics and lifestyle; missionary teaching; the uses of medicine; language and translation; Christianity, civilization, and commerce; the Church Missionary Society (a consciously evangelical body) and Henry Venn, the London Missionary Society, Catholic missions (as led by Francis Libermann, Bresillac, Comboni, and Lavigerie), and the idea of the importance of forming local churches and priesthoods—cultural adaptation; and what missionaries thought of Africa.
