The concept of the tragic sense of life has dropped out of contemporary sensibility, but tragedy, of course, continues. We deny tragedy by blaming, often the victim. The problem is traced back to St Augustine's “Problem of Evil” that challenges the goodness and power of God in the face of apparently meaningless human suffering. The search for meaning is the ultimate problem of tragedy. Fate and fatalism are attempts to give meaning to the world, to see the world in a certain kind of order, and to give it a meaning.
