This chapter focuses on the meanings of the visual narrative encompassed by the par. It examines the ways the par is conceptualized by bhopās and devotees; from where it derives its central position in terms of their understanding; and how it fits into the extensive and complex reservoir of meaning that is acquired and sustained from the main narrative and other stories the Bhopās tell. It also examines the scroll’s organizational features and the symbolic and religious significance of certain relevant images and scenes.
