Johannes Brenz was one of the principal theologians for the Lutheran reform in southern Germany. In his view of church–state relations, he allowed the state to play a positive role in the internal affairs of the church, but denied it the right to define doctrine or compel its citizens to subscribe to theological orthodoxy against their own consciences.
