The answers...
New improvements within OSO – what has changed?
At first look you will notice that the look and feel of the site has been updated, there are also search and browse improvements, new personalization features to allow you to bookmark content and searches. There are also clearer filters to get straight to the required content with speed and efficiency and links to Oxford and external content to continue your research journeys.
The new look OSO will save you time, allow you to follow further paths for enquiry and customize your research experience.
OSO was launched in 2003, providing access to 4 subject areas. Since then it’s grown to now offer access to 18 different subject areas, with more available from other publishers via the new UPSO platform. We encourage on-going feedback from our existing users and have redeveloped OSO to include a new look and feel, enhanced functionality and new content to meet the demands of the modern scholar.
Due to the new look and feel, you may think that things have been removed, but you are able to carry out all the searching and browsing functions that were previously available in OSO. For full information on new features, please refer to our OSO New Features guide.
If you have previously bookmarked a title in OSO, it will still be valid. If you bookmarked within a title, at chapter level, the bookmark will point to the title level in the new OSO. This is because you can now view a whole chapter within one scrolling OSO screen (before it was three pages on the screen).
5) How can I get a quick overview of the new features for myself/my users?
You can either take our tour, or read the OSO New Features guide
University Press Scholarship Online (UPSO) is Oxford’s new academic monograph platform. It currently contains monograph content from Oxford (on OSO) and an additional 5 university presses:
Fordham University Press
Hong Kong University Press
The American University in Cairo Press
The University Press of Kentucky
University Press of Florida
For more information on UPSO, please visit www.universitypressscholarship.com
7) How does OSO work with UPSO?
OSO is delivered on the UPSO platform, along with academic monograph content from the 5 other university presses. When you carry out searches within OSO, you will be able to cross-search all the content on the UPSO platform, choosing to expand your search to include results from the other publishers or not.
8) Do I have access to UPSO? What does it mean if I don’t?
Your institution can subscribe or purchase content from the publishers within UPSO, in the same way that they can subscribe to or purchase OSO content. You will be able to see abstracts for those titles that your institution does not have access, and full-text for those that they do.
You can filter search results to view items with Full-text access or Abstract-only to filter the content that you don’t have access to.
If you want to get access to content that you currently can only see at Abstract only level, we suggest that you complete a Recommend to your librarian form.
9) Will my subscription/access change as a result of these new changes?
No, your institutional subscription/access will remain the same.
10) How do I continue accessing the site via Shibboleth?
Should you be accessing Oxford Scholarship Online via Shibboleth there are some changes you may need to make to continue using the site. All users accessing via WAYFless URLs will need to replace the final section of their WAYFless URLs in order for them to remain active. Your current URL will look similar to this:
https://shibboleth2sp.sams.oup.com/Shibboleth.sso/Login?entityID=https%3A%2F%2Fidp.oupexample.ac.uk%2Fidp%2Fshibboleth&target=https%3A%2F%2Fshibboleth2sp.sams.oup.com/shib%3Fdest=http%3A//www.oxfordscholarship.com/oso/shibboleth
However following the re-launch you will need to replace the section following ‘dest=’ (highlighted in red above) with the following:
http://www.oxfordscholarship.com/SHIBBOLETH?dest=%2F
Users of Shibboleth 2 IdPs will need to continue to exclusively use WAYFless URLs to access the site. Should you require any assistance with editing your WAYFless URLs or if you are having problems accessing the site once you have made the above change, please contact us.
Shibboleth does not apply to institutions in North America.
11) How has the transition to OSO2 changed usage reporting?
Section Requests: the OSOv1 platform provided content in chunks of 5 print book pages per 1 web page. This meant that a single section request (counted in the BR2 report) meant 5 pages of a print book were viewed. The new site offers content in chunks of 1 entire book chapter per webpage. This means that customers will most likely see a drop in the number of Section Requests, even though they are actually looking at an increased amount of content.
Searches: the default setting is for the search query to include “All Partner Presses”, which is not limited to OSO. Therefore, all searches of this kind are logged in the UPSO product report on Hitlist, not individual publisher reports. This will result in a decline in the number of searches in OSO and FSO reports and a low number of searches in the other partner press sites. When individual partner presses or OSO is searched, these will count in those products’ reports.
Which books are within OSO? Existing content, new content, missing content
12) How often is OSO updated? Are there plans to make it more frequent?
OSO has scheduled content updates three times a year – in January, May and September. The OSO Archive and an additional content enhancement were added in addition to the scheduled updates in 2011 and 2010 respectively.
We are working to make the updates more frequent and will let you know as soon as this is implemented in OSO.
13) How soon after a title is published in print will it appear online?
Provided that the book has the appropriate permissions for inclusion online, it will go into the next scheduled update.
14) How can I find out which new titles are being added to Oxford Scholarship Online?
Recently-added titles within each subject area are displayed in a carousel on when you browse by subject, you can also filter by “Recently Published” titles in the search and browse results pages to view the latest content.
New updates are detailed on our What's New page and you can also sign up for a regular, e-mail alert containing new titles and other site news, or subscribe to an RSS feed from the Home Page, which delivers new information straight to your desktop.
15) There is an Oxford University Press book which I would like to see available on Oxford Scholarship Online
Please contact us with your suggestion. We will be uploading new titles to the site every three months. Please bear in mind that OSO only includes academic monograph titles, and not textbooks or reference titles.
Finding information within OSO – searching, linking, browsing
16) One of the cross-reference links in the text doesn't work
If a cross-reference link in the text isn't working, please contact us. We cannot correct faulty cross-reference links immediately. However, we will load the corrected data the next time we publish an update to Oxford Scholarship Online.
17) I am having problems with searching
Try looking at our online Help file which gives you lots of information about searching as well as tips on how to avoid common problems. It might be that you need to use a different type of search, or perhaps alter your search term to either cast your net more widely if you have too few results, or narrow your search if you've got more results than you can deal with.
18) Where are the footnotes and endnotes?
The footnote and endnote numbers are live links in the full-text. Navigate to a chapter to find the full text.
19) Can I follow links from Oxford Scholarship Online to other online resources?
Links are available from Oxford Scholarship Online bibliographies and references to other online resources. Clicking on the link will take you to a page describing the external resource that Oxford Scholarship Online has identified. If you or your institution has full text online access to this resource you will be able to view the resource.
Please note that this system does not appear if your institution uses an OpenURL resolver such as SFX or LinkFinder Plus. In such cases you will see your institution's preferred links on bibliographic pages.
20) The book I'm viewing has no chapter abstracts or keywords
Some abstracts and keywords are not yet supplied. They will be uploaded to the site at regular intervals. The vast majority of titles on the site have abstracts and keywords
21) When are the DOIs for titles from the latest content update available?
Following a content update to OSO/UPSO, there may be a short delay between the new content going live on the site, and the availability of the DOIs for those particular titles, as the DOIs cannot be registered before the content is live. CrossRef requires that a response page is in place before DOIs are registered. On OSO and Partner Press sites, this happens when the content is made live.
22) Are searches in OSO and UPSO case sensitive?
All lower case searches in OSO and UPSO are case insensitive, for example a search for "abraham" will return results with Abraham. When a search contains mixed case, the search becomes case sensitive. For example, a search for "aBraham" will return no results.
Working with the content – printing, saving, downloading
23) Can I print text from Oxford Scholarship Online?
Yes. You can print content from Oxford Scholarship Online by XML page unit – each is the equivalent of one chapter. To print any page from Oxford Scholarship Online, simply use the Printer icon in the toolbar at the top of the chapter. A preview window will appear with the correctly formatted pages, minus the site navigation components. Please note that printing restrictions apply – see below for guidelines on legal printing and copyright.
24) Can I save chapters to PDF from Oxford Scholarship Online?
Yes. You can print or save individual chapters to PDF from Oxford Scholarship Online. To generate a PDF of an individual chapter, simply click on the Download Chapter (PDF) option at the top of the full text chapter page. You can then save or print the PDF as required. Please note that Copyright restrictions apply – please see below for guidelines.
25) How much material can I legally print/save to PDF from Oxford Scholarship Online?
You are restricted by Copyright to the amount of information that you can print or download. It is very important that you read the Legal Notice, which includes information on printing and downloading to PDF, before printing or downloading anything from Oxford Scholarship Online.
Problems with the content – textual errors, display issues
26) I've spotted an error in the text
If you notice an error in the text, please contact us and we will endeavour to load the corrected text as soon as possible.
27) Why are the Greek characters in this text not displaying correctly?
This is part of a wider display issue on OSO, whereby the font Georgia doesn’t support an extended range of Greek characters. Different browsers interpret and render this information differently, and so we would recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of the browser you are using, or switch to Chrome 17, to improve your browsing experience.
Technical aspects of the content – OpenURL, DOIs, MARC Records, Usage statistics
28) Is Oxford Scholarship Online OpenURL-compliant?
Yes, Oxford Scholarship Online is compliant with version 0.1 of the OpenURL specification. To enable this feature in your institution, please access your account information in Subscriber Services. Oxford Scholarship Online also supports custom OpenURL resolver icons specific to your institution.
Also note that Oxford Scholarship Online is integrated with Ex Libris' SFX Knowledge Base, ensuring that the site operates as both a source and target for OpenURL.
29) Does Oxford Scholarship Online make use of digital object identifiers (DOIs)?
Yes, Oxford Scholarship Online uses digital object identifiers (DOIs) extensively throughout the site. You'll see them on a table of contents page as well as at the foot of every chapter page - for example: doi: 10.1093/0198296983.001.0001. The DOI is the best way of citing and linking to electronic documents. The DOI consists of a unique alpha-numeric character string which is assigned to a document by the publisher upon initial electronic publication. The DOI will never change. Therefore, it is an ideal medium for citing a document.
The correct format for citing a DOI is as follows: doi:10.1093/0198296983.001.0001
When adding links to reading lists, first locate the DOI from the foot of the Table of Contents or chapter page of a book. The International DOI Foundation provides a service at http://dx.doi.org enabling users to create a URL from a DOI simply by adding this site address and the DOI together, as with this example:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/0198296983.001.0001
For more information on these features please contact customer services through Subscriber Services.
30) Does Oxford Scholarship Online provide MARC records for subscribing institutions?
MAchine Readable Cataloguing records (MARC21 Records) are available for library professionals to download free of charge. Our records are NACO, SACO, and AACR2 compliant.
Click on the appropriate link on our MARC records download page to download a MARC21 format file (.mrc) containing records of books published in the latest content update, or of all the books currently published in Oxford Scholarship Online. Please note that you will require MARC record reader/editing software (such as MARC Edit) to load these files to your library system.
31) How are the Oxford Scholarship Online user statistics reports defined?
Oxford Scholarship Online began offering COUNTER-compliant statistics (following the Code of Practice for Books and Reference Works, Release 1) in mid-2008. In April 2011, we launched an expanded COUNTER service, reporting on title-by-title usage and offering the following reports:

BR6: Total Searches and Sessions by Month and Service
To access COUNTER statistics from mid-2008 through February 2011, please follow the View Institutional Usage Statistics link in Subscriber Services. Select the “COUNTER” link on the left, and use the form to generate your desired report.

a) Is it possible that some of your registration details are incorrect on our database?
If the IP address/es for your institution or the user name and password which you use to access Oxford Scholarship Online are incorrect in our subscriber database you will not be able to access the site. Check with your librarian or account administrator, and ask them to follow the instructions below.
First of all, you need to log in to Oxford Scholarship Online, then select Subscriber Services from the top toolbar on any page, and then go to 'Subscriber Services Log in for existing subscribers' to enter the Subscriber Services page for your territory. From there you can check that you are using the correct user name and password or that the correct IP addresses have been entered for your institution.
Once you have checked whether your IP address details are correct, please use the contact us section in Subscriber Services to tell us whether:
- your IP address/es need to be corrected (if so, please supply the correct address/es)

c) Could your account be on hold?
Occasionally an account is put on hold if we have not received your subscription payment, or if your subscription or free trial has expired. In both of these cases we would usually have been in touch with you about this. Do contact us for more information about this.

For more information, please contact us.
35) I purchased all the regular updates for 2009/10 but don’t have access to a monograph that has an upload date of Jan-2010. Why is this?
This title was part of a content enhancement upload and not part of the regular January content update (which was loaded in February 2010). If you want access to this content, you will either need to purchase the enhancement upload, or subscribe. You will have access to anything with an upload date of February 2010, as this is when the regular content update happened.
36) I don’t have access to a book from the additional content enhancement (upload date Jan 2010); how do I get access?
Please ask your librarian to contact their local sales representative requesting information on the 2010 Content Enhancement for OSO.
Customers in North and South America - oxfordonline@oup.com
Customers in the Rest of the World - institutionalsales@oup.com
A full list of titles available in the 2010 Content Enhancement can be viewed here.
37) I purchased all the regular updates for 2011/12 but don’t have access to a monograph that has an upload date of Oct-2011. Why is this?
This title is part of the OSO Archive, a purchasable content option from Oxford that offers access to prize-winning and seminal works, published in print between 1963 and 2010. The titles have been chosen for their continued relevance in the subject area. Click here for the full title list.
38) We subscribe to a subject area but I can see that there are titles published online in October 2011 that I don’t have access to in this area – why is this?
A new content option available to purchase, the OSO Archive, is now available, which provides access to seminal works and prize winning content, not previously available online, carefully selected for their continued relevance in evolution of scholarship within 8 key disciplines:
Business & Management, Economics & Finance, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Religion.
This content is available to purchase and won’t be accessible via subscription, so users may see titles within a module that they usually have access, with a "published online" date of October 2011. Unless you have purchased content from the OSO Archive in that subject area, you won't be able to view the full-text of those titles.
A full title list of the titles within the OSO Archive can be downloaded here.
For more information on how your institution can purchase this content, please contact your local sales representative.
39) After I enter my user name/password and click on "log in" and then try to search or use the indexes, I'm being bounced back to a blank log-in screen
It is possible that you are seeing an old page and need to alter your cache settings.
To find out how to refresh your cache settings, please refer to the online help in your Browser.
40) Do you offer library card access to Oxford Scholarship Online?

42) Users with off-site access to Oxford Scholarship Online
We do not allow remote access unless it is by a secure route e.g. Shibboleth, Athens, a referred URL access from an accessed-controlled page on the subscriber's website or access via a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Please contact us for more information.
43) What is your policy on cookies?
Cookies are required for subscribers to Oxford Scholarship Online in order to control access to the service. The default policy will be to use cookies for authentication. However, subscribers who have unlimited access licences for Oxford Scholarship Online may choose to disable cookies and will still be able to use the service, but note that usage statistics related to user sessions will not be available.
44) Questions about proxy servers
a) Will our proxy server IP address(es) be enough to allow access to Oxford Scholarship Online?
Yes. However, if you are accessing Oxford Scholarship Online through a proxy server then you need to give us the IP address of the proxy server in order for you to access the Oxford Scholarship Online site.
b) I've registered my proxy server IP address(es), but I can't access Oxford Scholarship Online.
If you are shown as not logged in when you access http://www.oxfordscholarship.com/ and have no access to full-text content then the IP address of your proxy server is not being recognised by the Oxford Scholarship Online site. If this is the case, please contact us, giving us details of the problem.
c) After previously successful IP-authenticated access via a proxy server, why am I now being requested to sign in with a user name and password?
If there is no obvious technical solution to the problem, please contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to check whether they have changed their configuration in a way that might hinder your IP-authenticated access to the Oxford Scholarship Online site.

Contact the office appropriate to your region with the list of IP addresses.
North and South America: oxfordonline@oup.com

Tip: remember to use the asterisk (*) wildcard character if you are registering an entire class of IP address, and condense IP ranges in the following way, e.g. nnn.nnn.1-30.*
a) I've forgotten my site administrator password
Please contact us and specify whether you would like to be reminded of your password, or whether you would like to change it (along with details of what you'd like to change it to) and we will send you the details as soon as possible.
b) Can I distribute my site administrator user name and password to allow access for colleagues?
No, this is a restricted ID which should be kept in a safe place for use only by the librarian or site administrator. As access to Oxford Scholarship Online for institutions is IP authenticated, your colleagues will be able to access service without a user name and password. If any of your colleagues requires a user name and password for off-site access to Oxford Scholarship Online, please contact us.
c) I have forgotten my user name and password to access Oxford Scholarship Online
Only account administrators can reset passwords. Please see your librarian or administrator for help.
