Partisanship and Niche News
This chapter returns to questions about the implications of the partisan use of news, both for the conduct of media research and, more broadly, for the progress of democracy. It argues that partisan media have a place in a democracy. Partisan media can unite likeminded individuals, help them to organize their political thinking, and motivate them to participate. But partisan media cannot do it all. Unchecked, partisan media create and inflate gaps in the citizenry: gaps between those with partisan inclinations and those without, gaps between those who participate in politics and those who do not, gaps between those who affiliate with the political left and those who affiliate with the political right. It is for this reason, this chapter states, that we must work toward counteracting these gaps and limiting spirals of partisan selective exposure that could undermine the workings of society.
