Songs of EDSA
This chapter reenvisions expressions of Philippine nationalism as separate from the nation-state but connected to a long history of revolutionary song through a study of music during the 1986 People Power Revolution. In this chapter, an assorted array of songs herald democratization as a hallmark of global modernity that is at odds with the aims of the state. The chapter also includes histories of the kundiman and the sarswela, relating both to the concept of alternate nationalism. There is a particular focus on the songs “Bayan Ko” and “Handog ng Pilipino sa Mundo.”
