Jail, Food Stamps, and Atheism
Based on in-depth interviews with two former believers, Nancy and Rita, this chapter presents the life stories of two apostates, exploring the personal reasons and circumstances behind their rejection of religion. While their stories are very different, these women also have some matters in common. Both were from poor, working-class families with little education; both struggled with drugs, bad relationships, and hard life circumstances. Yet, as they worked to successfully improve themselves, their faith simultaneously evaporated. Issues surrounding gender, religion, and atheism are highlighted and explored.
