Plus–plus chemistry: Manchester, 1931–7
This chapter details the life of William Lawrence Bragg from 1931–7. Following Bragg's 1930 nervous collapse, his wife Alice and father decided that he should get away from Manchester for an extended period. It was therefore arranged that he would spend the first 3 months of 1931 at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Munich. Although depression would not incapacitate Bragg again, black moods would prove a lifelong affliction. In 1937, Bragg was offered a position as Director of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, south-west of London.
