Friendship and business do not mix, especially when they lead to oral, incomplete fee agreements. When a lawyer achieved an unusually good result in a tax dispute for his client friend, the lawyer felt entitled to appropriate the entire refund as his fee, recalculating his hours and hourly rate to exactly match the refund. The lawyer refused to acknowledge the existence of a fee dispute or to escrow the funds. Even when applying for readmission after a two-year suspension, the lawyer could not admit culpability.
