Respecting Individuals When They GrieveGrieve
If we are to respect the individuality of those who are grieving, we must understand and appreciate the details of their lives before bereavement. We find meaning in experiences, because through experiences we have contributed to the worth and meaning of our lives. We also find meaning through connection. We sense that we live in service of a higher purpose. Each of us suffers uniquely because each of us is vulnerable to the shattering of a particular life pattern and the disruption of a particular life story. We are vulnerable in our connections with those who die. We are vulnerable in our intellectual and spiritual limitations. Self-respect does require a minimal self-awareness that allows us to recognize honestly when we have difficulty in meeting challenges of grieving. Self-respect requires that we seek the respectful help and support of others when we sense that we have reached the limits of our coping capacities.
