The final days: terminal care at home
This chapter focuses on the terminal phase of palliative care at home. The aims of care in the terminal phase are to enable and secure that the patient will die with dignity. The doctor plays a crucial role in establishing that the patient is in the terminal phase of the illness. In this period, symptoms such as pain, restlessness, secretions, haemorrhage, convulsions, vomiting, and dyspnoea become dramatic and massive. This period also requires an in-depth review of the palliative care from the perspective of the patient, to review the medication, the nursing care, and the care of the relatives.
