The ubiquity of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor throughout much of the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS), coupled with its unique properties, result not only in its functional implication in many complex integrative systems of the CNS, but have also ensured that neuroscientists will study it. Consequently, the NMDA receptor has been implicated in the organization of all sensory modalities in addition to many aspects of motor output. Much of the range of these functions has been treated in a recent review. They include, but are by no means limited to, the processing of visual information, auditory information, and the central sensitization of nociceptive responses. This chapter intends to discuss in some detail the contribution of NMDA receptors to the control of motor activity.
