A Review of the Literature on Rastafari
Scholarly literature on the Rastafarian movement is characterized by distinct approaches, emphases, or theoretical orientations. I have categorized these approaches in terms of how scholars tend to view the significance of Rastafari: millennial escapists, social change agents, a dynamic community, an authentic culture, and social/political activists. Historically, most of the literature on Rastafari has been written by professional academics outside of the movement. However, the emerging intelligentsia of the movement has been producing a growing body of literature in recent times. This review looks at the writings of both of these groups.
