Liquids
Water displays both cation and anion bonding strengths (through H and O respectively), and so can react with solids of similar bonding strengths, causing them to dissolve. One can predict the solubility, hydration spheres, and recrystallization products of salts dissolved in water. The same methods can be applied to non-aqueous systems and melts, provided they involve acid-base bonds.
