Abstract: The chapter explores the fact that although DU+014Dgen’s most well known version of the ShU+014DbU+014DgenzU+014D has 95 fascicles, he composed several more versions that revealed additional information about the Master. As abbot of Eiheiji, DU+014Dgen focused his attention on delivering the jU+014DdU+014D sermons in the Eihei kU+014Droku, a crucial text which, until very recently, has been so overshadowed by the 75-ShU+014DbU+014DgenzU+014D that it was virtually neglected in Western scholarship. Two other collections that are crucial for understanding the unfolding of DU+014Dgen’s career in relation to Chinese Ch’an are the ShU+014DbU+014DgenzU+014D zuimonki and the Eihei shingi. The chapter concludes with a discussion of DU+014Dgen’s life through the Decline and Renewal theories.
