Abstract: The chapter explores the fact that although D
gen’s most well known version of the Sh b genz has 95 fascicles, he composed several more versions that revealed additional information about the Master. As abbot of Eiheiji, D gen focused his attention on delivering the j d sermons in the Eihei k roku, a crucial text which, until very recently, has been so overshadowed by the 75-Sh b genz that it was virtually neglected in Western scholarship. Two other collections that are crucial for understanding the unfolding of D gen’s career in relation to Chinese Ch’an are the Sh b genz zuimonki and the Eihei shingi. The chapter concludes with a discussion of D gen’s life through the Decline and Renewal theories. Keywords: critical Buddhism, Eihei k roku,
