Abstract: This section includes cases that depict a spiritual transformation through the experiences of confession or repentance, including the extreme example of self-mutilation, as well as the realm beyond death populated by ghosts and relics. Encountering and overcoming the painfulness of death and dying is a central way of demonstrating the advanced spiritual training of Zen masters.
