Abstract: Appeals to widely held values of individual freedom and equality in order to derive some basic principles of democracy. It also shows that these values constitute the moral basis of socialism. The chapter defends an autonomy-based conception of liberty and shows that all those, and only those, who are subject to the authority of an association should exercise direct decision-making control over it. Other affected individuals should exercise indirect control, such as that which consumers exercise through the market.
Keywords: association, authority, autonomy, control, decision-making, democracy, equality, individual freedom, liberty, socialism,
