The case of Spain illustrates the complexity of social capital. The country has different kinds of organisations that may be civil, uncivil, or with varying “degrees of civility”. These may transform themselves from civil to uncivil form, and vice versa. For instance, churches, parties, and unions which were rather uncivil during Spanish Civil War began behaving in a civil manner and demonstrating civil character by the period of democratic transition.
