This chapter begins with a synthesis on the papers presented in this volume. It highlights commonalities between countries and the differences in theoretical perspectives. It then discusses trends in social capital in advanced democracies: declining electoral turnout, declining public engagement in political parties, declining union membership, and declining church attendance.
