Abstract: This chapter takes the semantic character of quotation devices. It discusses the origin of and difficulties for Davidson's paratactic account that treats, for example, ‘catapult’ as semantically equivalent to ‘the expression type of which that is a token: catapult’, and proposes a simpler alternative reference rule: the enclosure of an expression in quotation marks refers to that expression.
