Abstract: This chapter describes the roles of visual thinking in calculation, with the aim of showing that in many cases it is not peripheral. It does this by setting the visual aspects of calculation within an account of the operations involved and the cognitive resources used. The chapter also considers the epistemology of basic arithmetic.
