Abstract: This chapter explores the nature and uses of visual thinking with symbols in mathematics. It examines visual symbolic thinking, which is more varied than one might expect, to see how it can contribute to discovery, security, illumination, and generality. It also looks at the roles of symbolic thinking in certain algebraic examples.
