Frederick Beiser
This chapter discusses the various meanings Schiller gave to freedom in his philosophical writings. It traces the development of Schiller’s thinking about freedom, and explains its relations to his predecessors and contemporaries, especially Spinoza, Kant, and Fichte. It argues that Schiller’s thinking about freedom involves his attempt to resolve the renewed tension between naturalism and moral responsibility that arose from the critique of the Kantian dualisms.
Keywords: dualism, freedom, autonomy, choice, naturalism, determinism, will
