Frederick Beiser
This chapter explains how Schiller reconciled two apparently conflicting requirements of art: aesthetic autonomy and moral relevance. It contends that Schiller not only gradually resolved the tension between these requirements, but that he did so in a perfectly coherent way. The stages in his attempt to resolve this conflict are surveyed.
