This chapter is an exegesis of Schiller’s Anmut und Würde. It discusses the sources and influences on the text, both classical and contemporary. It critically assesses Schiller’s attempt to bridge the Kantian dualisms with the concept of beauty. It contends that Schiller’s concept of grace has been seriously misunderstood by many of his critics, who tend to conflate it with natural character and confuse the distinction between temperamental and moral virtue.
