Gonzalo Rodriguez-Pereyra
This chapter compares Resemblance Nominalism and its competitors in respect of various methodological virtues, namely coherence, preservation of intuitions, ideological economy, quantitative and qualitative economy, and avoidance of ad hoc ontology. It is argued that the superiority of Resemblance Nominalism lies in its avoiding postulating ad hoc entities. Theories proposing universals or tropes postulate ad hoc entities because they postulate entities, universals, and tropes, respectively, whose main or only claim to credence is that they provide a solution to the Problem of Universals. The chapter also argues that Resemblance Nominalism is superior to other Nominalistic theories.
Keywords: ad hoc ontology, Armstrong, coherence, ideological economy, intuitions, ontological economy, Russell, universals, tropes
