Abstract: This chapter distinguishes the book's project from other philosophical enterprises which bear some prima facie similarities to it. These range from linguistic conventionalism, through pragmatism, to Lockean empiricism. It offers some tentative explanations for the absence from the extant philosophical literature of the kind of epistemological proposal discussed in this book.
