Abstract: How can we make equal respect (the requirement at the heart of morality) compatible with a reasonable requirement of psychological realism in ethics? The chapter considers utilitarian, de-ontological, and Rawls’ contractarian conceptions of equal respect. It also considers whether equal respect allows some partiality and whether there is a difference between personal and impersonal values.
