Abstract: Which statement a token declarative sentence expresses is a function of the meaning or meanings of the type sentence (the propositions it expresses) and the context of the token sentence. The meaning or meanings of a type sentence are a function of the senses of its component words and the way in which they are combined. Words have one (or more) literal senses, senses that they are presumed to have independently of context that generates a normal meaning (or meanings) for a type sentence that contains them.
