In Aristotle's view, the good life is a life lived amongst friends, and in particular, amongst friends of virtue or good character. I contrast this emphasis on attachment and intimacy with the themes of a more impartialist ethics, such as Kant presents. I then discuss friendship as a relational form of external good and discuss issues relating to both chosen friendships and natural philia. Keywords:altruism,
