Frank Sibley
Raises the question of whether there is, as is often proposed, an intricate relation between the originality of a work of art and its aesthetic merit or value. Sibley follows Beardsley in asserting that originality, in a non-evaluative sense that concerns merely difference, has no bearing on value. He is explicit, however, about the need to distinguish between different uses of ‘original’ in order to reveal the ambiguities underlying the apparent disagreements of commentators with regard to the importance of originality.
