Narrative: The Quest for the Theoretical Meaning of Temperature
Hasok Chang
The precise measurement of temperature became possible by the middle of the 19th century. However, there were no theories of heat to direct the practice of thermometry in a useful way. This chapter discusses the difficulty of making a productive and convincing connection between thermometry and the theory of heat, and how such a connection was eventually made.
