The establishment of the fixed points of thermometry allowed the creation of numerical thermometers by finding a procedure for assigning numbers to the degrees of heat between fixed point and beyond them. This chapter discusses efforts to establish the numerical scale. This problem involved a deep philosophical challenge, which was overcome after more than a century of debates and experiments.
