An idealization fora principle is an assumption. The feature that distinguishes an idealization from a mere restriction is its role in explanations of the phenomenon the principle treats. The idealizations of normative decision principles control for factors in explanations of a decision’s rationality. In addition, meeting certain idealizations is itself a goal of rationality.
