Abstract: Examines the etiology of motivationally biased beliefs that manifest akrasia, as in some cases of self-deception, and argues that it is possible to avoid such beliefs by exercising self-control. Empirical work on belief formation and hypothesis testing is reviewed, and accounts of akratic belief and its opposite are developed. Other topics include belief-regulating principles and modes of acceptance of such principles.

Keywords: acceptance, akrasia, belief, bias, motivation, self-control, self-deception,
