Abstract: This chapter introduces asymptotic reasoning through the consideration of several examples, including the universal behavior of buckling struts and swinging pendula. It demonstrates the importance of asymptotic methods for the understanding of such universal behavior as well as their importance for understanding various types of relations between scientific theories.
