Abstract: This chapter discusses the development of algebra in Europe. Topics covered include the origins from which European algebra began to evolve and from which it took its name; The Liber abbaci (1202) of Leonardo of Pisa, which was the first major European mathematical text of any kind; the Ars magna, one of the great mathematical texts of all time; and Wallis' account of early algebra.
