Abstract: This chapter discusses the main features of British immigration and emigration in the 20th century and their effect on the labour market. It is shown that for a long time, there were strict rules governing who could enter the country and work, but this policy was never related to the needs of the labour market, as the government saw it. Immigration has not worsened the skills shortages in the UK labour market.
