Abstract: This chapter is concerned with intergenerational mobility between occupations, a theme that is further developed in the next chapter. The different sections of this chapter are: The assignment of occupations to social classes; Intergenerational mobility between occupations; Changes in intergenerational mobility over time; and The extent of intergenerational movement into and out of the top grade. The last section reviews and discusses the material presented, drawing out five main points.
