Here the aims of the book are presented. There is a brief discussion of the economy of India up to 1991 alongside the political developments that brought about economic reforms. The authors also present their views on what they believe would constitute an ideal-type economy. This, at a basic level, is a market economy in which private enterprise is supported by the state. The authors conclude with an overview of the rest of the book.
Keywords: economic reforms, fiscal measures, liberalization, market economy
