Abstract: This chapter is about the various practical obstacles that can get in the way of carrying out a research project and how to avoid the worst pitfalls. The chief tips are: (i) contacting other people affected by a study at the earliest possible stage; (ii) keeping farmers, zoo-keepers, and others fully informed; (iii) finding out what is feasible and what is not; (iv) making the best of what is available; (v) being prepared to modify a project in the interests of good design; and (vi) making sure permits and permissions are obtained before you start.
